If you’re wanting to build a Garden-inspired Morning basket then look no further! We like to bring nature into our homeschool, and what better way to do that than with a basket full of books about flowers, roots, and plants? I will share some ideas on how you can build a Garden-inspired Morning Basket. We will cover literature, writing, spelling, vocabulary, science, ecology, history, math, art, music, poetry, bible, and hands on activities! You don’t have to choose from every category—I include a variety to inspire curiosity based on my kids’ interests.

Poetry and Memory Work For a Garden Theme
I incorporate poetry into our morning basket time because it helps my children form an appreciation for literature. I appreciate that poetry exposes them to rich language and boosts their ability to focus. An unexpected side effect of poetry memorization is that it has strengthened their confidence with public speaking! We will be memorizing the poem, “The Garden Year” by Sara Coolige, which can be read here.
We also enjoy incorporating Latin roots into our memorization, especially ones that connect to the theme we’re exploring. Gardening offers plenty of great options, but here are three I chose for this study.
- Flos, floris (flower) → floral
- Radix (root) → eradicate
- Herba (plant) → herbivore
Lastly, we like to pick a few Bible verses to memorize. I like to bring attention to the fact that we can find God in every topic and subject. I love rotating memory work, but my kids enjoy memorizing Bible verses the most.
For a Garden morning basket theme I have selected:
- Genesis 1:11, “God commands the earth to “sprout vegetation, plants yielding seed, and fruit trees bearing fruit in which is their seed, each according to its kind, on the earth” (ESV)
- Matthew 13:31-32, “1 He put another parable before them, saying, z“The kingdom of heaven is like aa grain of mustard seed that a man took and sowed in his field. 32 It is the smallest of all seeds, but when it has grown it is larger than all the garden plants and becomes a tree, so that the birds of the air come and make nests in its branches.”(ESV)
Science and Nature Study
A Garden themed morning basket gives lots of opportunity for science and nature study. Nature study is especially fun because it comes with all kinds of hands on learning that brings science to life. I am hoping that my children will be able to better appreciate the life cycle of plants, how intricate a flower is, and how plants respond to the changes in the weather.

Arts & Crafts For a Garden Morning Basket
If your kids are naturally artistic and love to create drawings and paintings of what they are being inspired by you may not need a list of possible arts and crafts for your morning basket. My kids on the other hand need a little more guidance when it comes to creating art. I am not a naturally artistic person and like to have a prompt or activity to get me started and my kids are the same way.
A garden-inspired morning basket is a wonderful way to bring the beauty of nature into your homeschool. Through literature, poetry, science, and hands-on activities, children can develop a deeper appreciation for the world around them. This theme provides countless opportunities for curiosity, creativity, and meaningful connections—whether through memorizing scripture, exploring Latin roots, or studying the life cycle of plants. With a mix of structured learning and open-ended exploration, a garden morning basket can inspire both knowledge and wonder. I hope these ideas help you cultivate a learning experience that blooms in your home!
